Celebrating Fathers

“It is not flesh and blood, but the heart which makes us fathers and sons.”
-Johann Friedrich von Schiller

Tavis dreams of becoming an elementary school teacher and making a positive impact on generations of students. Every day, he’s working hard to accomplish that goal while serving as a strong, steady role model for his two young children.

However, life hasn’t always been easy for this 26-year-old father. Even though Tavis worked two jobs while attending Georgia State University, it wasn’t enough to cover his family’s financial needs. When he and his wife, Shamica, had trouble paying their rent and making ends meet, Tavis turned to Buckhead Christian Ministry.

“My credit was so bad,” he recalls. “I needed help.”

Fortunately, BCM provided emergency assistance, housing support and financial counseling to help this hard-working father and his family during a time of financial crisis. Best of all, BCM empowered Tavis with the tools to achieve long-term financial stability and helped him get on a solid career path.

“BCM is an excellent resource for people who need to start over,” he raves. “It’s a great program to help you get on the right track.”

Fortunately, like so many BCM clients, Tavis’s story has a happy ending. This Atlanta native recently completed his degree in Health and Physical Education at Georgia State University and is currently working as a paraprofessional in DeKalb County while he completes his teaching certification requirements. He’s well on his way to achieving his dream of being a teacher.

“I’m working toward my goals and providing for my family,” he explains. “I want to make sure they have a bright future. To me, being a great father means putting my kids first, doing what’s right and being there for them every day.”

Tavis is one of many devoted fathers we help throughout the year. On Sunday, June 15, we hope you’ll take a moment to thank all the dads who go “above and beyond” to support their loved ones and who serve as important role models in their children’s lives.

A Salute to Mothers

“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” – Rudyard Kipling

This past Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day, a holiday that has always been near and dear to our hearts at Buckhead Christian Ministry.

So many of the clients we serve are single mothers, working hard to provide for their families. The number of female-headed households is at a record high, and they often struggle to make ends meet.

These moms frequently work multiple jobs and wear many different hats. They are committed to their family’s success, but juggling childcare, transportation, their jobs, and more all on one income can make the situation precarious. A major illness, a car accident or a job loss can be catastrophic for single mother, sending her family’s finances into a downward spiral.

At BCM, we help mothers like Jackie, who successfully paid off $10,000 in debt through our financial education programs. We help moms like Jaylyn, who was facing homelessness because of the financial strain of providing for a child with a serious neurological disorder that requires the use a wheelchair.

We lift up families by offering the guidance and the tools to enable moms to become financially self-sufficient. We endeavor to equip women to be the best parents they can be and to serve as positive role models for their children.

It’s no small task, but it’s one that we take seriously. Whether we’re offering emergency assistance to a client who can’t pay her rent, providing food from the C. Spencer Godfrey Food Pantry or giving free clothing from Buckhead THRIFTique, we’re focused on providing a helping hand to Atlanta mothers facing crisis situations. At the same time, we offer the tools to empower women to break the cycle of poverty.

You’re never too old to appreciate the precious gifts you’ve received from your mother. And, there’s no time like the present to honor the mothers in your own life. We think every day should be Mother’s Day!

Boost Your Financial Literacy IQ

April is National Financial Literacy Month, making this an ideal time to become more educated about your personal finances and to develop a strategy to improve your overall financial health.

Today, many Americans are experiencing financial challenges that impact their daily lives. In fact, 30 percent of consumers report having no extra cash, making it impossible to escape the reality of living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Understanding money matters — like creating and managing a budget, paying down debt while saving for emergencies, and creating achievable financial goals — is an important step for Buckhead Christian Ministry clients. We encourage parents to set good examples for their children and to begin teaching their sons and daughters smart money habits early in life.

According to survey results from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, nearly four in five adults agree that they would benefit from advice and answers to everyday financial questions from a professional. Fortunately, Buckhead Christian Ministry’s Money Management Program offers assistance to individuals who need help boosting their financial literacy.

In a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution article, reporter Devika Rao spotlighted BCM’s Money Management Program, focusing upon the mentor-mentee relationship between Jennifer Ignacio and volunteer coach Robin Ryder. With help from Robin, Jennifer saved money and paid down $3,000 in debt.

“When I heard about the program, my financial situation was very difficult and I wanted to learn how to manage my money and save more money,” Jennifer said. “I had never learned how to manage my money from anyone or any place, so this was a new opportunity for me.”

As Atlanta’s economy continues to recover from a lengthy recession, it’s more important than ever to develop smart money management skills. If you’d like to learn more about BCM’s Money Management Program, please click HERE or call our main office at 404-239-0058.

Love Thy Neighbor

Valentine’s Day offers an annual celebration of romantic love, complete with bouquets of flowers, boxes of chocolate, greeting cards and fancy dinners at Atlanta’s most popular restaurants. However, every day should be a celebration of love, especially brotherly love.

In Mark 12:30-31, the Bible instructs us: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

Why are these commandments greater than all others? Because God wants us to take care of each other. By helping others in need, we glorify God and make a positive change in the world.
